The importance of de-sexing your female dog
There are numerous reasons as to why you should desex your female dog. One of the mains reasons is to reduce the occurrence of benign and malignant tumours of the mammary glands in unspayed female dogs. Desexing can largely reduce the risk of developing this type of cancer. In fact, early desexing before your dog has a chance to go in to heat for the first time is the best method of prevention. Delaying until before the second heat increases to risk of breast or mammary tumours by 8%. After the second heat cycle, this risk increases even further to 26%.
Symptoms of mammory tumours may include:
- Slow-growing single or multiple masses in the mammary glands
- Superficial loss of tissue on the surface of the skin over the mammary tissue, frequently with inflammation
